A quick summary of the highlights of Dr. Houston’s chapter on high blood pressure:

Blood Pressure Can Rise due to either of these two things being dysfunctional:

  1. Force of the heart’s pumping action

  2. Resistance to blood flow in the arteries

These Things can cause the Blood Pressure to Rise and Become Dysfunctional:

  • Caffeine

  • Low blood levels of vitamins C, D, E and Mg

  • High blood levels of iron

  • Low blood levels of coenzyme Q10

  • Low blood levels of lycopene (bright red carotenoid phytochemical found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables such as carrots, watermelon and papaya. It is not in strawberries, red bell peppers or cherries)

  • Smoking

  • High levels of stress

  • High levels of uric acid

  • High consumption of trans fats/hydrogenated fats

  • Obesity

Primary Recommendation for Blood Pressure Control:

  • Heart Healthy Diet

  • Regular Exercise

  • Reduce sodium intake: 1500mg/day

Supplements:

  • Cocoa: 30 gm dark chocolate daily

  • COQ10: 100mg twice daily

  • Vitamin C: 500mg twice daily
