Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Approach to Shoulder Pain

Pain in the shoulder can have many different causes including the primary joint itself, but more commonly it’s caused by the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia or boney dysfunction of the full shoulder girdle. This CME will discuss and demonstrate the Osteopathic Evaluation and Treatment of the Shoulder.

Shoulder pain and dysfunction account for greater than 14% of all general practice encounters, which is 3rd after back and neck pain among musculoskeletal complaints in the primary care setting. Approximately 50% apparently resolve within 6 months, while about 40% may persist up to 12 months. Pain in the shoulder can have many different causes including the primary joint itself, but more commonly it’s caused by the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia or boney dysfunction of the full shoulder girdle. This CME will discuss and demonstrate the Osteopathic Evaluation and Treatment of the Shoulder. Learning objectives:

  1. Review of shoulder girdle anatomy and possible causes of shoulder pain and dysfuntion.
  2. Review of traditional orthopedic exam of the shoulder to rule out definitive pathology.
  3. Review of somatic dysfunction that can be underlying cause of shoulder pain.
  4. Review of OMM techniques to address somatic dysfunction of the shoulder girdle joints and myofascial tissues.
  5. Educate stretches and other self-healing tools patients can do for themselves to help heal their shoulder dysfunction and pain.

Approximate time to complete the Course:

  • Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Approach to Shoulder Pain is 2 hours
  • This includes reading an article, watching the video course, and taking the post-tests.

Requirements for CME Credits:

      1. Review course/videos
      2. Complete and pass post test with 70% or more (A maximum of 3 attempts allowed)
      3. Submit evaluation
      4. Once you have passed your test we will notify the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) of your completion of the course .

BIO:

    1. Dr. Patricia (Trish) Murray received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 1999 from UNECOM. Prior to medical school she was a high school teacher for ten years. She completed an osteopathic internship in 2000 at UCONN, followed by a traditional internal medicine residency at UCONN.  After residency she practiced primary care internal medicine along with Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine from 2003-2005, and then went on to become a specialist in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMMOMM).  She has taught CME courses in manual medicine for many years and has been asked numerous times to produce a video series that focuses on the lab demonstrations of the different manual medicine techniques taught at the live courses. Dr. Murray has primarily taught manual medicine CME courses at UNECOM in Biddeford, Maine.
